Sandwichian Rhapsody at Fredi

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

“Can anybody fiiiiind meeeeee… a sandwiiiiich to looooooove?” This is the question Fredi, a sandwich bar tribute to Freddie Mercury, wants to answer with a big glammy “Yes.”

Located near Union Square, I’m pumped to have a new place to nosh beyond free samples from Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. The sammies, some named after Queen songs like “We Will Rock You” (a scrambled egg sandwich with black forest ham, bell peppers & onions), have a lot of heart on their own but are hard to resist as part of their nightly special: any sandwich, any side, and any beer for $12.95 after 5PM. I had the crunchy Tilapia with chipotle lime slaw, quinoa salad, a Lagunitas IPA, and an above average conversation with the friendly and witty bartender.

The spot is small but comfortable and serves breakfast through dinner (including brunch options), but most importantly: how fun is it to have an excuse to turn everything into a Queen song while eating away? Answer: Very. “Another one bites the… sandwich.” See?!
