Knowing how to eat is all the rage these days. While once our ancestors were content to merely find something edible and then eat it, the infusion of science into our food has created various niche knowledge sets about comestibles that require some pretty dense reading. While we’ve all been horrified by Fast Food Nation at one time or another, plenty of food politics and deliciousness permeate our entire diet, from organic to “organic” to “mostly organic.” So learn yourself some food knowledge with some FREE food to boot at a reading from Oran B. Hesterman’s new book Fair Food at Powerhouse Arena, tonight at 7 (RSVP req’d). The idea behind Hesterman’s philosophies is pretty common- eat locally. However, local eating can be tough based on the discrepancy of climates, fertile land, and societal demands all over this country. Sure, you can grow a bunch of stuff seasonally in fertile California valleys, but to change stuff we need to appeal to Oklahoma, too. Hesterman proposes a bunch of fundamental shifts in what we should expect to eat to greater influence our health and happiness while not destroying our environment for the sake of getting tomatoes in January. On hand will be some FREE local noshes to further the idea and keep you sated during some illuminating lectures. Eat, learn, learn to eat. Book Release Party for Fair Food by Oran Hesterman, Ph. D. Powerhouse Arena 37 Main Street (corner of Water & Main St.) [DUMBO] 7-9pm RSVP here
