Whether you believe that the “green revolution” is good for the environment or an elaborate scheme cooked up by Corporate America to sell you more crap is really up to you, but still a good topic for conversation. There is one significant advantage to going green and that is the preservation of this delightful rock that we live on. However, how does “greeness” play into the budget of a brokeass? That really depends on how you look at it…
I almost think that the green revolution was created for brokeasses. I mean let’s be real, you want us to conserve electricity? No problem, we usually unplug stuff we aren’t using to save on our electricity bill anyway. It’s just an added bonus that it’s also good for the environment. How about doing simple things like swapping expensive hand soaps for soap with eco-refill bags? Is it because we love the planet? More likely than not it’s because we have done the math and know that the eco-refill bag will save us money over the scent shop’s brand. You want us to combine our errands to reduce emissions, no problem! Most brokeasses don’t want to waste gas so we map out our gallivanting beforehand to make the most efficient use of what’s in our tank.
Being green also sheds a light on being more involved in your local community. You know the saying “Think globally, act locally.” It’s actually not such a bad thing. You are supporting your local businesses and can sometimes score much better deals than going to big box retailers. Conversely, because the local retailers do not have the resources available to them that a large corporation would, you could end up paying a little bit more. The choice is really up to you. You can feed the corporate machine or you can choose to feed your neighbor. It depends on how many pennies are at stake and how you feel about the situation.
