Super Taste Handmade Noodles

There are a zillion cheap noodle shops in Chinatown, and I’ve tried many of them, but one of my all-time favorite starch purveyors is Super Taste on Eldridge Street.  This tiny restaurant doesn’t get gold stars for ambience or service, but who pays attention to any of that when there’s a huge bowl of savory goodness sitting in front of you?! You have a choice between knife-cut and hand-pulled noodles – go with the hand-pulled for full slurping action – but both types come out of the kitchen springy, chewy and fresh. The accompanying broth is always full of flavor, and the meat always marbled with bits of translucent fat that may freak you out upon first glance but are oh-so-tasty. $5.50 gets you a bowl of Spicy Beef Soup that’ll fill you up for hours and all other dishes hover around or dip below this price. If you’re feeling like a baller, you can spring for the $3 plate of pork and chive dumplings as an appetizer, but you get so many that it could be a meal unto itself. There are also several vegetarian options. Whatever you get, I suggest adding the smoked chili oil provided at every table – it’s crunchy and earthy without adding extra heat.

After eating at Super Taste you can head down to Canal Street to do some budget shopping, or head up to the LES to do some budget drinking. Either way, you’ll have more than enough fuel for your trip and probably some leftovers to take to work the next day.

Super Taste
