You probably know the  Cotton Mill Studios as the cool building you pass on the 880 on your way to the Oakland airport with the “lofts for rent” sign that makes you think “it must be awesome to live there.” Maybe you know it because yes, people really do live there. In fact, the community is full of artists that show their work out of their loft; for the last year, the community has been showcasing their talent at the FREE  F3 at the Cotton Mill on the third Friday of every third month. Don’t worry about figuring that out, I’ll just let you know that it’s happening on Friday, October 21 from 6pm to 10pm.

Highlights include a fashion show, guest artists,  open studios, food trucks, a DJ,  full bar, and improv comedy performances at the Cotton Mill Theater by the aptly-named Jingle-town All-Stars.

The aforementioned All-Stars  will perform in two 30 minute sets with one 10 minute intermission, starting at 7:30pm and running to approximately 9pm. The theme of the show is Pulp stories,  inspired by exploitation films of the 1970’s: “It will be a show where bad things happen to bad people. “

Before you can say that the Cotton Mill Studios are in the middle of nowhere, I’m going to interrupt you and tell you that the event has already arranged for shuttles to take people to and from the Fruitvale BART station.

1,000 people attended the July event and it was a n ideal cheap way to spend your Friday night. It’s got something for everyone- if you want to chat up models and generally party, there’s lots of that to do, if you just want to peruse art in solitude, that’s also an option.

Out of respect for the neighborhood, the event ends at 10pm, so you’ll also have the rest of the night ahead of you to start phase two of your Friday night.

Robin was raised in the shopping malls of suburban Long Island, New York. As a teenager, her life goals were to become a writer and marry Bret Michaels. After attending college at the University of Delaware (yes, in the state of Delaware) and earning a graduate degree educationl at NYU, she's achieved only one of those goals. Along with writing, Robin enjoys performing improv comedy, internet memes, cross-stitch, and showing off her alarmingly extensive knowledge of obscure pop culture trivia. Currently, Robin resides in Oakland, CA and is writing a book about the 1980s teen book series, Sweet Valley High.
