In the current citywide catastrophe, the Franciscans most at peril are most often the little ones. From SFUSD to CCSF, educators struggle to keep kids from falling through the cracks every day.

SF’s Rooftop School is a haven for our town’s burgeoning creatives and when class is out the tutelage doesn’t end, but continues under the auspices of the fantastic Children’s After School Arts (CASA). CASA’s history goes way back to the early 80’s when a group of Glen Park parents though that providing instruction in the arts might be constructive for kids in afterschool care, as opposed to say the gamut of brain-atrophying activities out there.   And that was 1980.

Today CASA continues to bestow knowledge of arts and craft work to kids of varying socioeconomic, academic, and cultural backgrounds, as well as diverse familial ones like LGBT families and kids who express gender variance.

Just like the song says, when this old world gets these niños down, the gente of CASA help pick them up with skills to steel them against the battlefield their city has become and give them a voice through annual productions like this year’s City Not For Sale. It can’t hurt that these programs are headed up by an all star staff of teachers and coaches, among them Google, Google, Apps, Apps’ Persia, Castro Theatre impresario/ Star Trek Live! co-director Laurie Bushman, or Daddies Plastik’s Tyler Holmes to name a few.

Hmmm. Wy does making sand candles at the Los Osos Y, feels suddenly subpar?

You’re afternoon delights: Persia & DJ Tori

Seriously, this program kicks ass, and like so many amazing kick-ass city treasures, it desperately needs funding to continue. So being helmed by resourceful nightlife types, the artistas of CASA are hosting a little beer bustie at the Q-Bar this Saturday afternoon. There will be brew, Jell-O shots, twirl-worthy turntabling by Persia’s boo DJ Tori (also a CASA maestro), and lots of social justice queers lounging and boozing for a cause as only a real Franciscans can.

It’s for the kids, gurla. Be there.

Also vote YES on J– this is one of those groups that would greatly benefit from it.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
