The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 10.03.52 AMJust cause you’re broke, doesn’t mean your hair has to pay too. According to hair genius and local salon owner, Arzo Nazamy, “ Your hair is fifty percent of your overall style and dictates how people perceive you to how you feel about yourself.

I got some great tips from Arzo I thought I’d share with you.  She has over 20 years experience styling some of the most powerful and influential players in the Bay Area such as DJ Denise, Rose McGowan, Ally Hillfiger, to our very own Supervisor Jane Kim. Arzo is considered one of the top stylists in the world as she was featured on Bravo TV’s hit show – Shear Genius.

TipScreen Shot 2015-07-30 at 6.40.35 PM #1 -Know Your Hair Type

Arzo says “You need to know what kind of hair you have, so you know how to treat it. Not sure if you have fragile hair? “Take a few strands around your hairline and tug on then gently,” says Arzo, “If they snap easily, avoid tight hairstyles or chemicals like color, bleach and relaxers that are too strong.”

Tip #2 – Eat For Your Hair

There’s a reason they say you are what you eat: Nutrients literally build the proteins that make up your hair strands. Two B vitamins in particular — folic acid and biotin — have been shown to supplement hair health, length and thickness, says Arzo.

Folic acid helps the production of red blood cells, which powers the growth of hair. Foods rich in folic acid include green leafy veggies, oranges, soybeans and wheat. Biotin strengthens both hair and nails through its metabolism of fats, carbs and proteins. Brown rice, lentils, peas, sunflower seeds, walnuts and soybeans are all rich in biotin.

Tip #3 – Condition with Your Old Food

Mash a ripe avocado (pit removed) with one egg, then apply this home remedy to wet hair. Avocados are rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids, and minerals that will help restore luster to your hair, says Arzo. Leave on for at least 20 minutes, then rinse several times. Repeat once a week for damaged hair and once a month for healthy hair.

Tip #4 Know when to say NO
Screen Shot 2015-07-30 at 6.44.25 PMJust Say NO to peroxide, lemon juice, and “sun activated hair lightening” products. Check the labels and stay away from hair products that contain high levels of alcohol or peroxide. And please, do not try to lighten your hair using lemon juice or other sun activated hair lightening products. These products will cause your hair to dry out faster and will speed the process of damage caused by the sun.

Tip #5 – Don’t Do It All Yourself
“Don’t go doing it yourself with your house scissors. They really mess up the texture of your hair,” Arzo asserts. If your hair has a straw-like texture with split ends, the first thing way to restore its health is to get a trim. Cutting your hair will immediately make it look fresher and restore its body.

While a haircut is the only way to get rid of split ends, regular trims are your best protection against them. The longer you wait to trim, the greater chance you have of split ends worsening and traveling up the shaft. It may sound counter-intuitive, but this is why it’s actually best to get frequent trims if you’re trying to grow longer, healthier hair. Whatever your hair type or style, our experts recommend you get a cut or trim at least every six to eight weeks.

Arzo will hook you up with a 10% discount for your first visit because you’re a Broke Ass Stuart reader : ) just say “Im a Broke-Ass”, when you go in.
