Beautiful Women in Bookstores: Kat

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Beautiful Women in Bookstores is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a celebration of reading, intelligence, independent bookstores, and of course, beautiful women. In a time when bookstores seem to be disappearing this is our effort to show how sexy books and reading really are. Each installment will have a different beautiful woman photographed in an independent bookstore and interviewed about what it is that makes reading so damn important.

If you’re interested in doing shooting your own pics for BWB and having us publish it, hit up alex@brokeassstuart.com

With an origin story that starts way back in 1851 Books Inc. is the “The West’s Oldest Independent Bookseller” They’ve done quite well for themselves too. Books Inc has eleven locations in California, four of which are in San Francisco. One of my favorite things to do in SF is get lost in their Opera Plaza location. it is huge!

It seems that Kat had a great time in the store as well. Let’s see what she has to say:

beautiful-women-in-bookstores-Kat-4 Name: Kat Eves

Occupation: Wardrobe Stylist, Writer, and Publicist

Where are you from? Alameda by way of Maryland, and I refuse to lose my East coast salt

Who are your favorite authors? Flannery O’Connor, Max Frisch, James Baldwin, David Sedaris, David Foster Wallace, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, Chuck Klosterman, Nick Hornby, Anne Lammott, Tami Winfrey-Harris – I like most anyone who lays it bare, hilariously, beautifully, or horrifically (or all of the above).

What are you reading right now? Things No One Will Tell Fat Girlsan anthology created by the incredibly inspiring body positive blogger Jes Baker. It features some of my favorite body positive activists – Virgie Tovar, Bruce Sturgell of Chubstr.com (which I contribute to), and The Body Is Not An Apology founder Sonya Renee Taylor, to name a few.

Where is your favorite place to read?: On vacation, preferably next to water.

Who are some women who inspire you?: I’m fortunate to admin for an invite-only group called the Fempire, a 5k+ strong group of ambitious women-identifying badasses chasing their dreams and setting other women up for success. This answer would be way too long if I gave a full answer, so I’ll leave it there.

Do you have a favorite bookstore?: Upstart Crow bookstore in San Diego still wins my heart. The comfy seating, a coffeehouse, and that whole “next to water” thing I referenced earlier make it a charming place to sink into a book. I spent a lot of time there in college.

What’s the last book that really moved you? The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America by Tami Winfrey-Harris should be required reading in schools, maybe even in workplaces, and certainly it’s a book every feminist should read. I was a publicist for Berrett-Koehler Publishers when her manuscript reached one of our editors, and he knew I would obsess over it until we signed a contract with her (he was right). It’s a celebration and education of the true diversity beyond the stereotypes that black women rarely see acknowledged, and it’s fierce, funny, smart, and necessary. I would read anything Tami writes.

Who is your favorite literary character? The Misfit from Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find is such an interesting and complex, god-like villain. I think about that story all of the time.

Which book have you read the most times? Did I mention how much I love Flannery O’Connor? Still crossing my fingers that the next American Horror Story will just be TV adaptations of Flannery O’Connor stories.

Is there anything sexy about good writing? I distinctly remember having a mind crush on Chuck Klosterman sight-unseen when I read Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, so that’s a definitive yes. I had the same feeling about the music of indie rapper Busdriver, who has some poetry published of his own.
