We wanna send you to see DJ Shadow!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I don’t know how it came to be that I acquired my Endtroducing album cover poster. But, the poster has been with me longer than most of belongings, always in the background ogling my most intimate stoner moments of my twenties. Lyrics Born donning that blonde wig in the aisle of the infamous record store, Records, in my hometown. Although Records is no longer with us, the ephemeral smell of the large, dimly lit space (and its designated kitty) on K street will follow me forever. It was a time when hip-hop was alive and well in Sacramento. Or, maybe that’s just how nostalgia serves me.

Josh “DJ Shadow” Davis had already been experimenting with making beats and breaks on a four-track recorder while he was in high school in the NorCal college town of Davis, but it was during university that he co-founded his own Solesides label as an outlet for his original tracks. Hooking up with Davis’ few b-boys (including eventual Solesides artists Blackalicious and Lyrics Born) through KDVS, Shadow began releasing the Hip-Hop Reconstruction mix tapes in 1991, eventually catching the attention of The Source magazine and Dave Funkenklein.
