Late-Night Hosts Address the Terrorism in Las Vegas, Politicians Send ‘Thoughts & Prayers’

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Another home grown, American terrorist, used high powered firearms to murder an incredible amount of innocent people.  The death toll as of this morning is 59 people, with some 520 injured and in the hospitals of Las Vegas, making it ‘the worst mass shooting in American History’.  Obviously after Sandy Hook and the Orlando Nightclub shootings, we are getting used to home grown terorsim and horrific body counts.  We have also grown used to our politicians sending ‘thoughts and prayers’, and doing nothing else to change things, despite a majority of Americans wanting gun control.

The type of guns used in the Las Vegas massacre have no business being in the hands of our citizens.  They were designed for one purpose only, and that is to kill as many people as possible, in as little time as possible.  These are not instruments for hunting deer, or home protection, or for going down to the ol’ gun range with grandpa, these are tools to commit mass murder, and by doing nothing we allow people to buy them everyday in this country.

What’s more, we now rely on entertainers and comedians to speak truth to power because our political leaders are clearly inept, and clearly owned by the gun lobby.  As Jimmy Kimmel (who is from Las Vegas) put it,  “I don’t know why our so-called leaders continue to allow this to happen … Or maybe a better question — why do we continue to let them allow it to happen?”

Trevor Noah: “Just to give you an idea of how far away America is from actual gun control, this week Congress is going to vote on deregulating gun silencers.”

Conan: ‘The sounds of those automatic weapons last night are grotesquely out of place in a civilized society.”

Colbert: “Doing Nothing is Cowardice”

Seth Meyer: “If you’re not willing to do anything, just be honest and tell us. … If it’s going to be thoughts and prayers from here on out, the least you can do is be honest about that.”
