You Can Help Bail Out Someone’s Mom for Mother’s Day

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

This year for Mother’s Day I’m not getting my mom flowers or candy or any of the things we’ve been told by Hallmark that we’re supposed to do. This year, just like last year, I’m donating $50 in my mother’s name to National Bail Out, an organization working to end the corrupt and broken system of bail money.

Each year, the week before Mother’s Day, they organize Black Mama’s Bail Out to bail women out of jail who would’ve otherwise spent Mother’s Day behind bars simply because they couldn’t afford bail.

They say it far better than I can so I’ll share this explanation from their website:

Everyday an average of 700,000 people are condemned to local jails and separated from their families. A majority of them are there simply because they cannot afford to pay bail. The organizations involved in the National Bail Out are working to end money bail and in the meantime get as many people out of cages and back to their families as we can.

Instead of me just copying and pasting everything from their site I recommend you go here and read it for yourself. And if you don’t have time for that and just want to go straight to donating you can do so right here.

Tell your mom why you’re not getting her flowers. Tell her it’s so you can help someone get home to their family. I have a feeling she’ll appreciate that a lot more. I know my mom does.
