The final phase of work to modernize the BART station at El Cerrito del Norte is officially complete. The renovations improve not only safety and accessibility, but the general look and feel of the transit hub on Cutting Boulevard.

According to a BART statement issued Monday, the second phase of the project included construction of two new public restrooms fitted with water bottle filling stations, LED lighting, a new bus lane, a raised pedestrian crosswalk and art walls depicting El Cerrito’s past and present.

The artist, Kyungmi Shin, was selected from more than 70 applicants by a panel made up of community members and art industry professionals.

The first phase of the El Cerrito del Norte Station Modernization Project tackled construction of a large window wall, two new elevators, two new staircases, a new fare gate array, an ADA-compliant bus island with new shelters and a new agent booth. Phase 1, completed in early February, also doubled the paid area size, fully renovated the south entrance and added several safety and emergency elements to both the station and the Ohlone Greenway that runs along the path of the tracks.

The project was made possible by various funding sources, including state Proposition 1B and Contra Costa County Measure J funds.

The station, long in need of an overhaul, typically serves around 10,000 weekday riders in El Cerrito and Richmond.
