President Biden And China’s President Xi Are Going To Meet In San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I don’t know what this means in terms of foreign policy, but I do know that San Francisco is likely to sweep the homeless because San Francisco doesn’t want the world to see how dysfunctional we are. We do that every time something big happens in the city.

President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet next month during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco. It’s a bit like setting up a coffee date – they’re still figuring out the details, like the exact date and where they’ll meet. But hey, it’s in the works!

I don’t know why that last line came out so peppy.

The White House hinted at this meeting after some high-level talks last Friday. They mentioned that Biden and Xi are “working toward” a face-to-face chat at APEC, so it’s on the horizon.

Before this, Biden had a sit-down with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, at the White House. It wasn’t just a cozy chat; Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House security adviser Jake Sullivan joined in. Serious stuff. After high-level discussions last Friday, the White House released a statement indicating that both leaders are “working toward” a face-to-face encounter at APEC. This suggests that it’s a developing situation.

Earlier on that Friday, President Biden had an hour-long conversation with China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, at the White House. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan were present, making it a significant diplomatic interaction.

Why are they meeting, you ask? Well, the relationship between the USA and China has been a bit rocky lately, with tension over Ukraine and Israel. They’re aiming to find some common ground to avoid more heated disagreements.

APEC is a big deal, with 21 Pacific countries gathering to talk about trade and economics. This Biden-Xi meetup is like a bonus round – not the main event, but it’s making headlines.

I honestly don’t know why they’re hosting this in San Francisco, when the city could be using the resources on the problems facing the city, which are numerous. Security costs for the event are likely to be astronomically high. I know San Francisco is trying to breathe life into Downtown, but I doubt having two geriatric world leaders share their interpretation of a world on fire will actually help anything.

Here’s to hoping…
