Spinagogue Smackdown at the Contemporary Jewish Museum

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

John Heywood, 2009 Major League Dreidel Spinagogue Champion -- and a Gentile!

At this time last year, i.e. Hanukkah time, I was living in a house with Jewish roommates and freaking the freak out for eight days straight.  This year, I’m in a teeny studio that barely fits my full-sized bed, let alone holiday decorations, namely a Christmas tree.

The folks over at the Contemporary Jewish Museum must feel my pain, because tomorrow they’re hosting a special Hanukkah edition of Ritlab, a DIY program that they ran over the summer.  The event is FREE with museum admission, which is only 5 bucks after 5pm on Thursdays and a small price to pay for the chance to compete against John Heywood, the 2009 dreidel-spinning champ, for a free Spinagogue (the official game board of Major League Dreidel).

There’s supposed to be a bunch of other activities at this thing too, including CHOCOLATE-MAKING.  Yes, please.  But really, what better way to celebrate the second day of Hanukkah than trying to see how long you can keep a dreidel spinning on a regulation board?

Hanukkah Edition of RitLab at the Contemporary Jewish Museum Thursday, December 2, 6pm – 8pm 736 Mission Street (btwn. Third & Fourth) FREE with regular admission (or $5 after 5pm)

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
