Theater on a Boat, 9/11 Memorial in Song, Political Subversities at The PIT

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

September is a month that marks new beginnings (cooler air, changing leaves) and some unfortunate ends (like the end of summer '“ and possibly your summer fling).  In this time of transition, take advantage of these unique, hilarious, and heart-felt FREE or cheap events.

Woodshed Collective presents THE CONFIDENCE MAN

Last summer, over 3000 people attended the Woodshed Collective’s Twelve Ophelias in McCarren Park Pool.  This fall, aboard the Decommissioned U.S.C.G. LILAC at Pier 40, the collective will present their newest piece based on Herman Melville’s novel The Confidence Man.  This colorful story of a mid-19th Century con man who charms and then cheats his fellow passengers is certainly relevant in light of recent economic events surrounding Bernard Madoff, sub-prime lenders, and the deflating of the real estate bubble.  Told through a series of interwoven and simultaneously performed vignettes, as the audience, you will be invited to choose which character’s story to follow, thus blurring the line between performer and patron.  This FREE site-specific, installation theater piece is running now until September 26th.  For ticket reservations and the show schedule check out Brown Paper Tickets.

SEPTEMBER 11th MEMORIAL SING

Every year since 2005, the Brooklyn Arts Council has presented a memorial project on the anniversary of 9/11.  This year, they have invited singer-songwriters to perform their music in a concert of original songs about the events of September 11th.  And guess what?  It’s not too late to submit (or even write) your song!  Check out the details on BAC’s website.  If you just want to listen, bring your blankets and food, and spend the early evening in the Fulton Ferry State Park on the waterfront in DUMBO looking at the lights of lower Manhattan.

POLITICAL SUBVERSITIES

So now we get to the unabashed, shameless, self-promoting plug.  Come see me and 8 other kick-ass writers, comedians, and performers in a political cabaret!  Over the past 4 years, I’ve been part of a collaborative performance group called Political Subversities.  This ever-evolving cabaret of darkly funny songs and topical sketch comedy about culture and politics will make you laugh so hard you snot yourself, as well as attempt to present our current affairs in a new, sometimes shocking, light.  After sold-out performances at Joe’s Pub and the Culture Project, we are doing 4 Friday shows at The People’s Improv Theater.  It’s like The Daily Show' only nothing like it.  Intrigued?  Tickets cost $10, beer is cheap, and I’d love you forever if you made it out!  Here’s a promo from YouTube.  And another.  And a taste of one of the songs.

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
