Broke-Ass of the Week – Jesika Gorton

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude.  Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit'probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week?  Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

This time around our Broke-Ass of the Week is Jesika Gorton.  Besides having a middle name that is incredibly hard to live up to, there’s also a chance that she’s cooked some of you dinner and you didn’t even know it.  She’s got some great tips about where to eat, drink and how to get more FREE samples than you know what to do with.  Read below find out all her tips.

Name: Jesika Christ Gorton

Age: 35

Occupation: Prep Cook

What neighborhood do you live in?: Soma/ Downtown

Best money saving tip: Free Samples! Free Samples! If you sign up on all the free sample web sites, before you know it, you’ll be receiving a new treat in the mail almost every day. I will never need to buy razors or tampons again! Sometimes if you agree to answer their survey, they will send you full sized products to try out.

What do you refuse to spend money on?: Music downloads. Why pay for them if you can get them for free?

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: My computer from a Craigslist ad for $600

How’d that feel?: It was difficult, but it’s a nice computer. Maybe one day soon I will upgrade from a dial-up connection.

Favorite cheap eat: Huge portions for cheap @ Tu Lan (6th& Market Sts.) and of course you can never go wrong @ Tommy’s Joynt (Van Ness & Geary)

Favorite dive bar: Well, it’s much, much cheaper to drink at home, but Dave’s Bar is a tiny little shit hole really close to my house. They have real good cheap food there, too. Drinks are about the same price as anywhere else in this city.

Best deal you’ve ever gotten: Well just recently I talked my boss into buying my Muni Fast Pass every month for me so I can get to work. 'œGroupons' are awesome also.

Favorite free thing to do: Free walking tours of S.F. and Oakland are available from April thru'“ October. I still enjoy them even though I am a San Francisco native. Hiking is great, too. There’s a website 'œmeetup.com' that also gives me lots of FREE ideas of things to do.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: I’d take a long vacation. I don’t have much need for any more clutter in my life

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: It’s good. Everyday I try to find the things in life that make me happy and do them.

Do you own my book?: I would if it were free.

Best hangover cure: Sleep it off. If that is not an option (like work or some other obligation), I would suggest having another drink.

Are you a hipster?: Nope.
