One Thing Far, One Thing Close, One Thing Movin All Over The City

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I don’t usually head out to Jersey on a Saturday night, but this looks really, really cool.  The community-run, depression-era grand Loew’s Movie Palace in Jersey City is showing two films from the 1920s today: the Marx Brothers’ first film The Cocoanuts (1929) at 4pm, and Safety Last with live organ accompaniment starring Harold Lloyd, Mildred Davis, Bill Strothers, and Noah Young at 8pm.  Opulent, stunning, and unlike anything you’ve probably seen before, the theater will take you back to an era where going to the movies was a real event!  (It’s not too far.  Just take the PATH train to Journal Square.)

If you’re looking for some entertainment a little closer to home, Sunday is Pickle Day 2009!  Head to the Lower East Side to sample pickle dishes from, yes, ALL the LES restaurants.  There will also be picklers, canning demonstrations, new exhibitions, and more in the parking lot on Broome between Essex and Ludlow.  It says to come in costume' whatever that means to you.

The Hip Hop Subway Series 2009 is also happening on Sunday.  Get on the back of the L train at 8th Ave with other MCs, beat-boxers, and heads and celebrate getting back to the basics of hip hop – just the words, the beat, and the drive.  Theme is Call and Response, so even if you’re not planning on freestyling, you can be sure you’ll have an opportunity to jump in.  Circle cipher will take place at Lorimer, and solo open mic at Broadway Junction.

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
