Play Me I'm Yours: NYC Street Pianos Project

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Writing for any New York based blog, you’re required to stay on top of all the cool events that are happening in the city. And while my list of bookmarks is the length of a phone book, sometimes you notice cool things just by walking by. Every day I walk through Chelsea Market, partly because it’s unbearably hot outside and partly because I like to start my day with the scent of baked goods. While there are always changing displays and samplings I noticed an old piano propped up near the entrance to the market yesterday. Above it was a sign that read “Play Me I’m Yours”.  While I didn’t take the bench and bust out Piano Man right there, I certainly was intrigued.  Turns out this piano was just one of 60 pianos set up in public spaces all over the city. The project spans from June 21 to July 5, everyday from 9:00am-10:00pm.

The project was initially conceived by the British artist Luke Jerram, who started it back in 2008 and has since installed over 167 pianos in cities all over the world. The project is meant to encourage people to interact with the few public spaces we have in the city. Their site posts people’s photos and videos of those playing the piano. I’m sure there are plenty of talented musicians out there who’s repertoire is not limited to Hot Cross Buns. Having seen opera singers bust out Arias in the subway for some extra cash, talent seems to spring from unlikely places in this city.

Kicking off the same day as the Make Music Festival, there certainly isn’t a shortage of free entertainment this week. With over a 1,000 free performances throughout the boroughs, the streets “are alive with the sound of music”.  Sorry had to go there. The pianos themselves aren’t too shabby either. Each one has been hand-painted and decorated by local artists and volunteers so before they are even played, they make for beautiful street installations. After the project ends, the pianos will then be donated to local schools as part of the  organization Sing for Hope’s non-profit efforts.

Check out their site to find out more about the project and to track down a piano near you. If anyone wants to do a Heart and Soul duet with me, you know where to find me.

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
