See Precious Without Having to Rent it

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Sometimes, cultural zeitgeists turn out to be embarrassing. Movies that encompass pop culture at a certain time – Oscar nods, an Oprah success story, Mariah Carey without makeup on, Mo’Nique and her unshaven legs – are frequently too ridiculous to actually drop dollars to see. But you must! No one can hold you back!

Well, culture warriors, this one’s for you – they’re showing “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” for FREE tonight in Bed-Stuy and Gabourey Sidibe, the actress who plays the lead in the film, will be on-hand for questions. I met her once at the afterparty for the episode of Saturday Night Live she hosted and she was very sweet and had a laugh that rang for rooms and rooms. I guess they’re doing a panel discussion with Gabby after the screening, which could be interesting to stick around for.

“Precious” Screening & Panel Discussion
Tuesday, August 17th
6:30-10:30 p.m.
Von King Park Cultural Center
670 Lafayette Avenue (between Marcy and Tompkins)
[Bed Stuy, Brooklyn]

Polina Yamshchikov - Flirt Poor

Polina is Siberian by way of Alabama, and therefore cannot pronounce "fire" or "iron" correctly but despite this can still woo men with her cooking skills and enormous Russian cheeks. She can usually be spotted on the streets of Brooklyn either yelling into a cell phone in one of five languages or swilling gin at an inappropriate hour of the morning.
