Your Saturday: Beer, Brats, Art Festivals, and Sordid Secrets

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

With New York still enjoying its Indian Summer, it seems like everyone is trying to pack every possible event into one weekend before the chill of fall sets in. Normally we just pick one event, but there is just too much good stuff to choose. So whether you want to frolic outdoors or indulge your vices indoors, we’ve got a cheap/free event for you.

The end of September can only mean one thing: Oktoberfest. It just might be my favorite holiday. There’s no religious connotations so it’s all inclusive (well except for maybe AA members), and it involves drinking giant steins of German beers and eating as much roasted meat and pretzels as your heart desires. Do your part to “follow tradition” and head over to Brouwerij Lane in Greenpoint for 1/2 liters of Oktoberfest beers and free pretzels and sausages from 1-10 pm. Whether you actually make it to 10 pm all depends on your tolerance prowess.

Brouwerij Lane | 78 Greenpoint Ave | At Franklin St | Greenpoint Brooklyn | 1:00- 10:00pm

Want to get a year’s worth of culture fix in one weekend?, then the Dumbo Arts Festival is for you. Now in its 14th year, this three-day festival takes over all over Dumbo featuring every kind of artistic medium you can think of. With over 500 participating artists, 100 open studios, galleries and 50 some stages, you certainly can afford to be picky. Some highlights include a musical dance piece involving giant bubbles in Brooklyn Bridge Park,  Victorian style portrait sessions, a floating concert on a barge, video projections on the Brooklyn Bridge and many more. Click HERE for a full schedule and guide.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday | Throughout Dumbo | Prices vary by performance

theDanger kids are at again this weekend with a new theme “Sordid Secrets”.  Despite their air of mystery there’s always two things you can count on at these events. One: that it will mostly likely take place at a loft in Bushwick, and two: that there will be some sort of fire breathing/playing. Not a bad combination if you ask me. Expect plenty of sweat-soaked dancing and free-flowing PBR. I’m also intrigued by their promise of a “fire-heated hot tub”.  If you’re the keeper of a very sordid secret yourself, email them an alias and your secret and the best one will receive the prize of free drinks all night. If there was ever a good reason to gossip, this is certainly one.

Saturday, 3rd Ward | 195 Morgan Ave | At Stagg St | Bushwick | 7:00am-7:00pm | $10 before 10pm

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
