Spectacle: $5 Movies in Williamsburg
With a multiplex on the way and a recently opened art-house theater, it seems like Williamsburg residents will no longer have to hop on the L train to fulfill their cinema needs. But more theaters does not always equal more options. After all, multiplexes tend to play more wide-release films like Garfield than Alphaville. And who wants to see a lasagna loving cat for a cool $13? Luckily there’s some underground options popping up catering to film snobs and the culturally-deprived alike.
Spectacle, is a non-profit venue located in South Williamsburg that plays with the typical concept of movie screenings. From hard to find out-of print films, to childhood favorites like Baron Von Munchausen, they offer a rotating selection of performances and screenings that are uniquely refreshing. They even employ the old practice of playing live music in accompaniment to silent films, which is a rare thing to find these days, even in New York. And for “theatre” not “theater” buffs, there are also monthly performances from Dome Theater.
