Poor Man’s King Feast

My friend Matt showed me this restaurant a few years ago, back when I was really broke. That means, basically, living in a crawl space, surviving off food stamps and having little to no spending money. But the poor still need a few quality pastimes. For example: going to the movies (I had a friend who worked at a theater and let me in for free), going to bars (plenty of friends who worked at those), and going out to restaurants.

For those of us who have worked at a restaurant, or have had a friend who worked at a restaurant, it is known that you must pay for at least 50 percent of the bill at the end of the meal. So, in short, during my time of complete broke-assness I lost a large majority of my friends who worked in the restaurant business due to the fact that I wasn’t going to drop $20-$30 for a good meal. Oh well, fuck ‘em.

Krolewskie Jadlo (King’s Feast) was my palace, my sanctuary. Also, the only place I knew that I could pay $3.75 including tip and have a filling meal. I don’t know what you think you can get for $3.75, so let me tell you. At King’s feast you can order the white borscht for $2.75, which has a hard boiled egg and a sausage in the soup, plus it comes with a side of mashed potatoes: PLUS every meal comes with pickles, bread and PIG’S LARD. (Mmmmmm, pig’s lard is seriously amazing!).

This place is very distinct because of the two Knights that stand guard in front, so for many of you who don’t know the name of this restaurant, I guarantee you’ve seen it before. The three course lunch specials are very affordable at $9. And all the soups are of the finest Polish quality and all very cheap (under $5).

So, King’s Feast, I salute you in all you wondrous cheap glory, and crown you the palace of poor-men kings, people like you, people like me, and all the other broke-asses in the world. Thank you.

Bobby dropped out of college at the age of 20, said goodbye to his papaw in the small town of Copper Hill, GA, and went to India, where he studied professional pauperism in ashrams and taught English to children. From New Delhi he flew to London, where emigration considered him a "vagabond with no roots to return to", and he was put on the first plane back to America. After finding himself in the freezing snows of Chicago, some guy at a bar offered him a job transporting a car to NYC, where he is currently stuck in Ridgewood, Queens. His travel website The Music Underground has helped many find the obscure in foreign lands.
