Check Out Local Artists at the Brooklyn Museum’s Raw/Crooked Exhibition
Bushwick may be rife with artists, but unfortunately most of its dwellers haven’t earned big-ticket exhibitions at major museums or galleries yet (duh, that’s why they’re called “struggling“). Well, not so at the Brooklyn Museum– the institution is giving under-the-radar BK artists their time to shine in a new year-long exhibition called Raw/Crooked. The show presents the works of five emerging, local artists– all recommended by an advisory board of well-known Brooklyn artists– in their first major museum exhibitions. The first installment in this series, sculptures by Bushwick’s own Kristof Wickman, ends this Sunday, November 27th– so be sure to visit the museum before then!
Kristof Wickman takes everyday objects like pumpkins, exercise balls, and pizza boxes, and often intertwines them with casts of the human body in thoughtful, humorous ways. For his Brooklyn Museum exhibition, he made many new pieces inspired by objects from the museum’s collection. Major props to anyone who can make beautiful, interesting art from the detritus of a college kid’s favorite greasy meal (large pizza for one)– I will for sure be supporting ol’ Kris before his exhibition comes to a close.
For more information about the other artists in the Raw/Crooked series, check out the Brooklyn Museum’s website. Like the Met, the Brooklyn Museum works on admission by donation, so they won’t turn a broke-ass away if you only have a crumpled, measly George Washington or Abe Lincoln in your wallet. Don’t ya love that? Get over to Crown Heights and show some love to some up-and-coming Brooklyn artists!
Until Sunday, November 27th
