Smart Wine-Shopping at Harlem Vintage

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

‘Tis the season of endless parties – it’s not even Decemeber, yet, and I already have three holiday celebrations, two birthday parties, and one housewarming to attend – and it’s expected that I bring some refreshments to all of them. I keep my busy, booze-filled schedule affordable by going to Harlem Vintage on Frederick Douglass Boulevard.

From the outside looking in, Harlem Vintage seemss like a cozy little wine cellar where you can sit and sip on vino while working on a screenplay or something. It’s unfortunate that I can’t use it as my personal study, but it is extremely fortunate that the wine selection is extensive and won’t overburden your pockets. Every time I go in, I find wines for $8.99 or less – the price of a 6-pack of beer, and especially delightful when you consider that some places will charge you $10 for one glass of wine. The selection is extensive and has something for everyone, with everything from hearty malbecs, to my personal favorite, delightfully carbonated vinho verde (note: I will not stop drinking carbonated green wine just because it’s not summer, thankyouverymuch). You’ll find that the staff is extremely helpful in guiding you to the right choice, or you can go on a Saturday when there are free wine tastings that are usually accompanied by a sweet deal! One of the nicest touches about Harlem Vintage, though, is the information they give you about the wines – you can see whether a bottle is organic, or, even cooler, which ones are made by female vintners. So, if you’re looking to imbibe wines that are affordable and conscious, Harlem Vintage is the place to find them.
