The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Do you happen to be both a vulgar potty-mouth who swears like a sailor, and a linguistics nerd who loves to learn about the origins of words? Well, you’re in luck– Jesse Sheidlower, Editor-at-Large for the Oxford English Dictionary (and, awesomely, author of a book called The F-Word), will be discussing dirty language at Word Bookstore in Greenpoint tonight. Considering his credentials, Sheidlower seems like the premiere expert and perfect person to effing teach us a-holes about words and shit (pardon my French… or should I say, OED-approved foul language?).

To be discussed by Sheidlower: a behind-the-scenes look at life at the OED, the process for how dirty words get included in dictionaries, and the history of the F-bomb from the sixteenth century to today. The lecture seems like it will be both information– rich and wildly entertaining– however, not for the easily offended. On the other hand, if you’re like me and constantly find yourself quickly covering your mouth in embarrassment after slipping up at work or in front of a group of small children, then why not learn where the expletives you’re constantly spouting off come from?

So get yourself over to Word in Greenpoint tonight– the lecture is FREE, so you won’t even have to dip into your stash of quarters from the swear jar you’ve filled to the brim. More information can be found HERE.
