NYC Pride 2015: Something for Everyone

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Pride is upon us! This is absolutely one of the best times to be in New York City. I look forward to the parade every year as an official start to my summer festivities. This year feels really special as Stonewall was granted landmark status by New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission just days ago. It feels even more so because this is the first time a NYC landmark was designated it’s significance solely on it’s history to the LGBT community.

As history goes a few weeks after the riots at Stonewall 500 people gathered in Washington Square Park to show their gay pride and peacefully show their support. 46 years later Pride is still strong.

This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that it is legal for all Americans, no matter their gender or sexual orientation, to marry the people they love. Like Katy Perry says, “After a hurricane comes a rainbow.”

The Pride Rally tonight will no doubt be an extension of the celebrations from today’s ruling. So at Pier 26 the kickoff to Pride weekend will begin. It will be hosted by the fantastic actor Titus Burgess. Adore Delano, Ashanti, and many other talent will be performing in the rally. If you don’t have a ticket, fear not. Here are some other pride events to cover our bases.

Friday June 26th:

For the Artsy: Opening reception for photographer I-Dea’s The Goddess Within Gay Pride 1994 exhibition.  This will consist of photographs from Gay Pride in New York on the 25th anniversary of Stonewall and the Gay Games in ’94 at LGBT Community Center (208 West 13th Street, Room 210) from 7pm-10pm. This is a free event.

For the Burly: A dance party for the for the brawny and beardy gentlemen. The perfectly titled Furball event will be held at Space Ibiza NY (637 W 50th St) at 10pm. Tickets $15-$20.

Saturday June 27th:

For the Ladies: The Dyke March is a protest not a parade, very important to remember but it is an essential part of the weekend. The march raises awareness about women’s and trans rights. This event is open to all ladies who like ladies and self-identified women. Meet at Bryant Park (40th to 42nd Sts between Fifth and Sixth) around 5pm. This gathering is free. But there are a few rules to follow.

After the march join your fellow lady-folk at the all girl dance party Teaze at Pier 26 from 3pm-10pm. Ruby Rose from Orange is the New Black will be DJing a set. General Admission tickets still available for $29.00.

Sunday June 28th:

For All: The crown jewel of it all is the official Pride March! And this year’s Grand Marshals are Sir Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen. It’s such amazing experience if you’ve never been. The floats, the costumes, the music, the glitter! The festivities begin at Noon at 36th & 5th. The march route is marked on the map below. This event is free and open to the public.
