LOUIS ARMSTRONG’S WONDERFUL WORLD FESTIVAL

Down the road from Louis Armstrong’s home and at the site of the World’s Fair, Queens now has a festival worthy of Louis’ immense cultural legacy and the Wonderful World he celebrated in his music. Hosted by Kupferberg Center for the Arts, the Wonderful World Festival has welcomed music legends that are influenced by Satchmo’s lasting music, and this year is no different. This year’s line-up includes Queens-born rapper and gourmet chef Action Bronson and New Orleans’ eight-piece brass ensemble The Soul Rebels.

LOS GAITEROS DE SAN JACINTO

Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto has been the most important gaita and traditional cumbia ensemble in Colombia since the mid-1950s. The fact that the group has persisted and includes several generations of musicians speaks to the vitality of this tradition. Gaita is a term used to name a Colombian musical instrument, various musical genres, and an ensemble (the conjunto de gaitas), all from the Caribbean region of Colombia, from where much commercially available Colombian traditional and popular music comes.

Lying Lydia is a piercing look at our civilization’s targeting of women, colonies, and the truth. In the mold of Churchill and Fornes, Lying Lydia is a mysterious and darkly funny chamber work featuring masterful performances from some of Caborca’s veteran actors, as well as an original soundscape by Keenan Hurley. Truth may have died in the disaster. About Caborca: Hailing from Puerto Rico, US America and beyond, Caborca makes sprawling, adventurous works in theatre and film.

Stuart Schuffman, aka Broke-Ass Stuart, is a travel writer, poet, TV host, activist, and general shit-stirrer. His website BrokeAssStuart.com is one of the most influential arts & culture sites in the San Francisco Bay Area and his freelance writing has been featured in Lonely Planet, Conde Nast Traveler, The Bold Italic, Geek.com and too many other outlets to remember. His weekly column, Broke-Ass City, appears every other Thursday in the San Francisco Examiner. Stuart’s writing has been translated into four languages. In 2011 Stuart created and hosted the travel show Young, Broke, and Beautiful on IFC and in 2015 he ran for Mayor of San Francisco and got nearly 20k votes.

He's been called "an Underground legend": SF Chronicle, "an SF cult hero":SF Bay Guardian, and "the chief of cheap": Time Out New York.
