Broke-Ass of the Week

Broke-Ass of the Week – Monica the Intern

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude.  Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit'probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week?  Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

Name:  Monica Miller aka Stuart’s unpaid and underappreciated intern.

Age:  22.

Occupation:  Student journalist and Stuart’s lowly intern'as you can see, I got the short end of the stick.

What neighborhood do you live in?:  Japantown, San Francisco. Konichiwa, bitches.

Best money saving tip:  Work at a restaurant that serves delicious food and eat for free constantly. Working in the Ferry Building really taught me that you definitely need a job you can get some sort of money saving perk. And considering Stuart doesn’t even feed me for the work I do'

What do you refuse to spend money on?:  Makeup. My mom works for Maybelline, and I have never ever paid for makeup. I was taught to always get the hookup.

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought?:  I have a tendency to save and spend big on things, but'probably my Ipod Photo when it came out. That shit was like $400! Insane!

How’d that feel?:  I suddenly realized how my parents felt when my brother and I badgered them for stuff constantly. So, I guess you could say it was the defining moment of me never wanting to have kids.

Favorite cheap eat:  Tacos. Tacos. Tacos.

Favorite dive bar:  The Phone Booth, by far.

Best deal you’ve ever gotten:  About a month ago, I was heading to the TL for some delicious Indian food and I was with my friend, Jack. As is anywhere in the city, we saw a huge pile of junk on the street, just chillin’. As we crossed, I had the best score moment of ALL TIME: 1952 mint condition Olivetti [Italian] typewriter, with working ribbon still in it! I love it, but you better believe I disinfected that motherfucker about a billion times.

Favorite free thing to do:  God, there are so many, I don’t even know what’s best. Maybe a stroll through Golden Gate Park or 40’s at the pier.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?:  Considering I work for free [grr], there is a lot I’d buy. But probably tickets and trip money to Disneyland for me and all my friends.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?:  Always! I love working 16 hour days, having a dumb ass as a boss and managing dimwits at a low life paper!

Do you own my book?:  It’s somewhere. Check it out, guys '“ Stu is so fucking cheap, I don’t even have a copy of the New York book yet. And I’m his UNPAID INTERN.

*Editor’s note: In my defense, I don’t have any copies to give Monica right now.  I only have one for myself.  But I swear you’ll get one someday-ish.

Best hangover cure?:  A joint in a warm shower, followed by ½ of the eggs in a tasty nest at the Pork Store. Pop two painkillers, eat half of your plate, pass out, and have the rest later. Works everytime.

Are you a hipster?:  Are you a dumbass?
