Tropic Treasure: Cheap Tiki Drinks and $2.50 Musubi at the Hukilau

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news
Well, hello sailor...

Well, hello sailor...

Feeling a little fruity?  Are the trade winds calling your name and filling your head with visions of tranquil isles.  Well, if its tropical drinks you crave and don’t feel like spending a fortune at the Tonga Room or hiking out to Trader Sam’s, then the Hukilau is a good alternative.

Everyday they have some island-themed concoction on special all day and night ($5 Mai-tais on Mondays; $3 Lychee-tinis on Wednesdays, $5 Blue Hawaiians on Saturday.

Food wise, your best sticking to appetizers if you’re trying to save a few bucks, although you get a grip of food if you go the Loco Moco route. Also, their service tends to be chaotic or non-existent, so plan on being there for a while or try your luck  at the bar.

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
