Bakesale Betty – Cheap Eats and Occasionally FREE Cookies!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I fucking love San Francisco.  I think it’s impossible to have a bad day in this city.  Sometimes, though, I need to get out for a little R&R.  What I would really like to do on these days is go home and have my mom cook for me while I dodge her questions about what I’m doing with my life.  But my mom lives far away, so I settle for the next best thing: Bakesale Betty in Oakland.

Bakesale Betty is some of the best comfort food I have found in the greater bay area.  They only sell two kinds of sandwiches – fried chicken and egg salad – so don’t embarrass yourself and ask for something different.  You get what they give you, and if you don’t like it, don’t eat it.  See?  It’s just like Mom’s kitchen!  They also sell amazing cookies and this frozen lemonade that I get even when it’s hailing outside.  Unfortunately, a lot of people must share my absent mother issues because there is always a line out the door.  It usually moves fast, and if it doesn’t, someone comes outside and gives you said amazing cookies for FREE.  Love it.

Sandwich + Lemonade + Cookie = $10.  While this meal would be free at your mom’s house, this is arguably the better deal because you don’t run the risk of accidentally staying five minutes too long and ending your visit with an emotional breakdown.

Rebecca Pederson - Cheap Date

Rebecca graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Literature, but she tells everyone she majored in Psychology so they don't ask her for book recommendations. She likes coffee, pickles, free yoga classes, and spends a lot of time with her dog.
