Record Store Day 2010 — FREE Show & Special Releases!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Not into vinyl? Not into you.

Saturday, April 17th is Record Store Day 2010 — YAY MUSIC!  Taking place the third Saturday in April every year, Record Store Day was created in 2008 to laud all the awesome independently-owned record stores that are still around.  Why this means fun times for you and me:  Musicians generally enjoy making a little money, which is more likely to happen when people buy their albums instead of illegally downloading them from the Internet.  To support places that sell their albums, like independent record stores, said musicians will make appearances, which is precisely what is happening on Saturday!  In addition, over 100 items will be exclusively released in honor of Record Store Day in limited quantities (like the 7″ vinyl of Bon Iver and Peter Gabriel covering each other that I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on).

There’s several participating shops in SF, including aQuarius recOrds and Force of Habit Records, but some extra cool FREE stuff is happening at Amoeba, including gift certificate giveaways and gift bags with any purchase while they last.  Also, at noon, Charlotte Gainsbourg will be signing copies of her new album, IRM (probably looking all effortlessly beautiful and French.  Ugh, Charlotte, how can I love you and hate you at the same time?!), and at 2:30pm, Jónsi, the singer from Sigur Rós, is sure to rock it with a live performance to promote Go, his new solo album.

It’s gonna be sunny this weekend, so after Amoeba, you can take your new shiny records for a walk through Hippie Hill.  Pure, unadulterated, weed-in-the-air happiness.

Record Store Day 2010, Saturday, April 17th Amoeba Music Charlotte Gainsbourg signing @ 12:00pm FREE Jónsi show @ 2:30pm 1855 Haight Street [Upper Haight]

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
