Joe's Ice Cream Survives Rent Hike and Moves Across the Street
I hope you're coming too, my orange delight!
I had a minor coronary when, while arriving at my stop on the 38 Geary, I glanced out the window to see that the windows of Joe’s Ice Cream were papered over signaling that one more of the city’s institutions had bit the dust.
Closer inspection, relieved me as I discovered they had simply moved across the street, a happy ending to a common story for small long-time businesses. Although they’ve been there for decades, the move was necessitated because the landlord at the former site jacked up the rent.
Though, the well-worn charm is absent from their new digs, the family that runs Joe’s more than makes up for it with their easy going nature, delicious ice cream and cheap luncheonette counter.
I think the prices might be a few cents higher on the menu in places, but not by much.
At the end of the day, though, I think I like Joe’s the best because not only is it a luncheonette but it also serves egg salad sandwiches which I’ve learned either people love or gag over at the mention. Delicious.
