Get Your Anime On at the Bridge Theatre's FREE Cowboy Bebop Marathon

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Anime. If you're into that.

Although I will be with my family tomorrow night talking about the baby Jesus and pretending Santa is real for my way-too-old-for-that-shit little brothers, I realize that 1. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, so to many this Saturday is just another Saturday, and 2. Since so many SF-dwellers are transplants, not everyone can afford to take off for the holidays.  Not to worry — there are still plenty of things to do in the city this weekend.

One of the cooler (and FREE!) events is the Bridge Theatre‘s midnight marathon of Cowboy Bebop, which will begin Saturday night at 11:59 and will last til about 3am on Sunday morning.  If you’ve never been to a midnight showing at the Bridge Theatre (or anywhere, for that matter), you’re definitely missing out.  Tall boys in backpacks and convenience-store-bought king-size M&Ms are the name of the game and it really never gets old.  Cowboy Bebop has some hardcore followers, so the crowd should be pretty interesting too (especially since there’s supposedly also a costume contest attached to this.  I don’t know about you, but I’m sort of costumed out for the year).  While I’m not the hugest anime fan, as a rule, it’s impossible to dislike Cowboy Bebop.  At least that’s what my college metafiction professor said when we watched it in her class, and who am I to disagree with someone who’s qualified to teach a course called “metafiction”?

Cowboy Bebop Movie Marathon at the Bridge Theatre Saturday, December 25, 11:59pm – 3am 3010 Geary Blvd. (btwn Blake & Cook) [Laurel Heights] FREE (donations accepted)

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
