All-Music Trivia Night Every Monday at Minx

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

How many times have you gone to trivia super excited, like, “Oh, man, this night’s gonna be SO AWESOME,” you’re all stoked and riled up, and then by Round 2 you’re suddenly a jaded, growly-voiced Tom Waits, like, “Are you effing SERIOUS?  These assholes are cheating with their iPhones.  There’s no WAY anyone remembers what brand Monica Lewinksy’s you-know-what stained blue dress was.”  (The Gap.  Duh).  But then — hallelujah — the choir of angels begins to sing, you have to name the artist and song name of said choir, and the MUSIC ROUND has officially begun, bringing happiness and joy into your life once again.

Or I could have just said, “The music round at trivia night is the funnest, so go to Minx.”  Every Monday night, the Lower Nob Hill bar hosts an ALL-MUSIC trivia night, which is the best thing I’ve heard since my gynecologist confirmed I did not, in fact, have chlamydia that one time.  In Cory from Minx’s words, the trivia contains “none of that geography or current events bullshit.”  Finally!  In true San Francisco fashion, every trivia night has a theme — the most recent was “Sweatin’ to the Oldies.”  I would have KILLED at that since oldies and Christian rap was the only music I was permitted to listen to until age 16.

And, of course, there are prizes.  The bar gives away shots & drinks throughout the trivia, and the winner of the whole operation gets a FREE bar tab!  So even if you don’t really have the range of music knowledge it takes to win (i.e. you think Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” is actually Bruce Springsteen (DISCLAIMER:  Joke stolen from The Office:  Season 5, where it makes much more sense)), it’s worth it to head down, hang out and try to score some FREE Monday night booze.

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
