16th Annual Anarchist Book Fair This Weekend in Golden Gate Park

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

One of my fondest memories of elementary school is going to the quarterly book fair.  While the popular kids who — damn them — were born with naturally straight teeth and perfect vision stood around looking bored (if beautiful), eight-year-old me was pawing through those racks, trying to find the latest Babysitter’s Club books to blow my allowance on.

Thankfully, adults recognize reading as a cool thing, not a loser thing.  As such, they have special events celebrating it, like this weekend’s Anarchist Book Fair in Golden Gate Park.  If you’ve never been to this FREE event, now’s the time!  In addition to vendors selling tons of zines, pamphlets, art, and, of course, books, there will also be speakers and panels featuring artists, booksellers, reps from independent presses and more.  Check out the full schedule here.  And remember, our own Stuart got his humble start with a couple zines — so go and support local publishing!

16th Annual Anarchist Book Fair at the SF County Fair Building 9th Ave. @ Lincoln [Golden Gate Park] Saturday, April 9, 10am – 6pm/Sunday, April 10, 11am – 5pm FREE

Christy Jovanelly - Cheapskate Commentator

When Christy announced she was leaving her family's Southern California home and moving to San Francisco, her mom said, "Have fun in that den of sin." This is the only (however sarcastic) advice Christy has ever taken from her mom, who also told her to join eharmony.com and cover her eyes during sex scenes in movies. Christy puts her creative writing degree to good use by locating the typos on Chinese food menus and spends most of her time challenging friends to all-you-can-eat contests and trying to get that one bartender at Zeitgeist to smile.
