Get your Craft on!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

So I’m a huge craft nerd, …like seriously. I can spend hours and hours in Michael’s (it drives my boyfriend crazy). But I figure that anything I can make myself is waaaay better than anything I can purchase. I mean, it might not come out as crisp and clean, or flawless. But to be honest, that’s what makes “crafting” special– all your sloppy accidents and un-intentional mess-up’s make your craft unique; it makes it your own!

I’ve keep hearing about the Museum of Craft and Folk Art’s amazing Craft Bar with Etsy Labs, held every first Thursday of the month. (Why I still haven’t gone to this awesome monthly event is beyond me. But, tomorrow, I’ll see you there!) This place gets pretty crowded, and why wouldn’t it, with all the amazing crafts, food, drinks, and music? All materials and refreshments are generously volunteered by local providers.

Usually directed by featured artists or local crafters, this event features easy projects, designed for participants of all levels, that help guide and inspire creativity. If you’re not necessarily looking to participated in this month’s featured project, check out the Stick and Bitch corner, where crafters can work on their own projects from home or start something new. For those who are unable to attend in-person, Etsy’s online interactive classrooms, Virtual Labs, allows for you to follow the demonstration which is streamed live at 1pm PT the day of the Craft Bar event.

Tomorrow, Craft Bar introduces needle-felter Jackie Huang of Woolbuddy. If you haven’t seen these adorable little creatures, you can check them out at the Museum Store or if you’re wandering around the Inner Sunset, Urban Fauna Studio has some in stock, as well! Basically, they are these adorable little animals made of felt that Huang created a few years back, when he was looking for a unique toy to give to his newborn daughter. The critters have been so popular that they have even been featured in national conventions such as Comicon, Wondercon, Alternative Press Expo (APE), and the Maker Faire.

Huang will be showing everyone tomorrow to make one of his more popular characters, the owl. Should be hoots of fun!

CRAFT BAR with Etsy Labs Thursday, August 4 (and EVERY first Thursday of the month) 6-8pm Museum of Craft and Folk Art
51 Yerba Buena Lane
San Francisco, Ca 94103

Paulette Greenhouse - The Penny Pincher

Paulette Greenhouse - The Penny Pincher

Paulette Greenhouse is a journalist and graphic designer, obsessed with her beloved pet hedgehog, Lisa Pickles. Seriously, she can talk about that prickly little princess for days! Paulette enjoys fashion, music, and art (cool points are gained if DIY). Although she tells outsiders that she lives in San Francisco, Paulette actually lives in nearby Pacifica because she can't afford to be that cool. The truth is she hates money and believes that it is source of many major problems in the world. But since society has made money so damn important for adequate survival, she slaves away at a lame local corporate restaurant, receiving crappy tips from people even cheaper than she is. (damn!) But above all, Paulette believes in giving exact change– it's a way of life!
