The Cycle Resumes: Bike Party’s Birthday

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I know I write a lot about bike-related events. There are obvious reasons – bikes are THE environmentally-sound and fast way to get around, they provide good exercise even if your bottom gets abnormally large and triangular as a result, they’re inexpensive-ish and fun to trick out – but I think I might have some cycling-related fantasies that come into play, too.

Almost every month I go to Bike Party, a joyous celebration of all things wheeled and quad-powered. At Bike Party, you speed next to in-all-likelihood-very-attractive-youngish people (IALVAYP). At each stop, you writhe and stomp next to other IALVAYP. At the end, from what I remember and gather of friends’ reports, IALVAYP kind of trickle away, spent and happy, often in pairs.

In short, if you’re young and have a bike, bike party is an IDEAL place to meet a fun, equally ample-buttocked mate. I’ve never done it, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t tried. Tonight (Friday)’s occasion is absolutely no exception. The IALVAYP are celebrating not only bikes, but Bike Party’s one-year anniversary. Meaning: cyclists will be decked out in their finest finery. Monocles, cummerbunds, and organza will abound. In short, everyone’s going to look damn good, get damn sweaty, and speed through the night en masse before, one hopes, getting lucky.

Lucy's been able to live lots of places but holds her cornfed/pie-fueled Midwestern roots most dear, maintaining too loudly and too often that the Outer Richmond is the Midwest of SF: driven through to get elsewhere and knocked around for no reason (but what other neighborhood has bison?!). You can find Lucy letting things languish in her fridge, purposefully (limoncello!) or not (yogurt...), mouthbreathing, scouring Golden Gate Park for apartment-worthy items, sleepily serving up double nonfat half-caf-half-non-caf lattes at a certain cafe, skulking in various other ones, and yelling under cover of night and costume at SF Bike Party.
