gloaming

Yes, I’ll tell you what gloaming is…

At Adobe Books, the great archetypal bookstore of the Mission, has an almost secret backroom gallery where they feature some great art. It’s always FREE to check out- just walk back through the bookstore.

This month they are featuring Laura Sutro, medium of the gloaming hour. What’s gloaming, you ask? Here’s what the Internet says:

gloaming [ˈgləʊmɪŋ] n:  Poetic twilight or dusk
[Old English glōmung, from glōm; related to Old Norse glāmr moon]

And if you click through to the gloaming page this guy will say gloaming for you in a deep, mechanical voice that makes you feel like Sauron is in your living room. Do it.

Here’s how the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery describes the show:

“In her gallery debut, Sutro evokes a sublime isolation, an atmosphere of impasse and uncertainty, between real and virtual vantage points. In these nocturnal settings, a fugitive luminosity recedes out of absorbingly dark monochromatic color. Featuring orchestrated color of a unique and compelling design—vibration, contrasts, varying between synthetic and organic colors. In this exhibition, she presents works of art in various stages.”

I have only the vaguest of notions about what that all means, but I love checking out art in the Adobe Backroom Gallery because it feels like you’re in on a secret.
