BA of the Week Singer/Songwriter Naia Kete

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit — probably not.

Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.

Naia-Kete

This time around our Broke-Ass of the Week is Naia Kete who is playing this weekend at the Outside Lands Festival. Rolling Stone just called her “an earthy soulstress…whose dynamic vocal sound and smile are magic”, which is way better than what they called me (an asshole). She just returned from a string of Summer Dates including a great performance at Bonnaroo. Her new EP “Fire Breather” continues to garner praise. Let’s see what kind of insightful tips she has for you broke folk down below:

Name: Naia Kete

Age: 23

Occupation: Musician baby!

What neighborhood do you live in?: Los Angeles

Best money saving tip: Be organized and know what your expenses are! Oh my god I can have such a hard time with the simple things like saving receipts, sticking to a budget (especially on the road), but it’s so important!

What do you refuse to spend money on?: An extra drink with a meal. It seems so mall, just a couple bucks here, a few bucks there, but it ads up! I remember when I first got together with my boyfriend he would always order coffee or orange juice with breakfast or something and it annoyed me cause I was like, you always end up spending more than me! I’ve loosened up a bit now, but yeah.

Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: My iPhone. I think I’m still paying it off on my credit card! Worth it though. I’m stuck to this thing.

How’d that feel?: Exciting! I finally had an iPhone like everyone else!

Favorite cheap eat: A Trader Joe’s salad. They’re like $4 and packed with good veggies and protein. Love it!

Favorite dive bar: The Dirty Truth from my hometown in Northampton. Not really a dive bar, but man I miss that cider.

Best deal you’ve ever gotten: The other day I went into Starbucks and they have me I think like 2 venti lattes for $1. I was pretty excited.

Favorite free thing to do: SING! Obviously 🙂

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: A home for myself and my family.

Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: Love love love it! I wake up in the morning and have the incredible blessing and opportunity of doing what I love with the people I love. The money will be there. Until then, keep hustling!

Do you own my book?: No. Sorry. Haha.

Best hangover cure: Getting a massage by someone you love.

Are you a hipster?: At heart, absolutely! Haha
