Nostalgic for the grittier, bygone San Francisco? Upcoming exhibit, Jim Jocoy: Order of Appearance, transports viewers back to a raw moment in SF history, when stateside punk was being birthed in local dives.

Jim Jocoy, a Korean-born and Bay Area-based artist, has photographed the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Sid Vicious, and a host of other famous personalities and punk royalty. He is perhaps best known for his 2002 collaboration with Marc Jacobs and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, a collection of photographs which celebrate punk fashion.

This new show looks beyond punk’s timeless, DIY style. Order of Appearance is an intimate study, focused on one raw moment in SF youth culture. Jocoy’s photos document a night of debauchery, from beginning to end, from preparational dye jobs and makeup application to bruised knees and flipped cars.

“The eye of Jim Jocoy finds beauty in the wild. His photography is always in service to the magic of the devious iconoclast, exhibiting dignity to the outriders.”

Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth

“Jocoy finds the powerful contrasts of an era in San Francisco sandwiched between sexual liberation and the AIDS epidemic in these vivid photos of his friends who were affected by both.”
– Matthew James-Wilson, VICE Magazine
