Your Chance to Demand a “Caretaker Mayor” for San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

You’ve probably heard by now that, in the wake of Mayor Ed Lee’s untimely death, the race to be the next mayor is proving to be an interesting one. While there are eight candidates running, there’s a fear that if Supervisor London Breed is given the mayorship until the election, she will have the unfair advantage of being the incumbent when the election happens. So, people are calling for a “caretaker mayor”, one who is not running for office, to run the city until a permeant mayor is elected.

While the below message did come from someone on the Mark Leno campaign it’s something I imagine all candidates will agree on besides London Breed, since she’d be the one benefiting if she was mayor before the election. Anyways, here it is:

For the first time in 15 years, San Franciscans have an opportunity to let the voters choose their next Mayor. SF hasn’t had an open election since 2003, and this Tuesday is our last chance to make our voices heard. The voters of San Francisco deserve an independent mayor who isn’t using the office as a platform for their candidacy.

Show up at the Board of Supervisors vote on Tuesday 1/23 at 2 pm, to demand a “caretaker” mayor. San Franciscans deserve an open and fair election, not a power grab by the status quo to keep the mayor’s office out of the hands of the people. Join me in calling on our Supervisors to appoint an interim mayor whose only job is interim mayor — not candidate for Mayor, Supervisor, and Board President. When the same person voting on laws as head of the Legislative branch can also veto those same laws as head of the Executive branch, our democracy is under threat.

The meeting begins at 2pm – the appointment will come up for a vote at 3pm. See you this Tuesday in City Hall Room 250!
