Making Ways: The Unexpected Path That Lead to Creating Broke-Ass Stuart

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I was recently on the Making Ways podcast talking about the unconventional path I took to end up where I am doing this whole weird experiment called Broke-Ass Stuart. I’m really stoked on how it came out because it gives great insight into what it took to build this thing and what it’s like running it.

Since Rob Goodman, the cat behind Making Ways, did such a good job detailing the episode and explaining what the podcast is, I figured I’d just include his words. Check them out below and make sure to listen to the podcast!

Making Ways podcast documents the unexpected paths to creative careers––sharing the inspiring stories of writers, artists, marketers, and entrepreneurs who changed gears and created a life all their own. So we could not pass up the chance to interview the founder of this very website, a person that San Francisco Chronicle called an “underground legend” and embodies the intersection of so many qualities we love to see in our guests.

On this episode of Making Ways, the person behind the persona, Stuart Schuffman, shares his colorful backstory and a true behind-the-curtain look at what it takes to run this website. Stuart looks back on his first gigs with Lonely Planet, his publishing successes with his “living cheaply” city guidebooks, and the genesis and challenges of developing his TV show for IFC. Stuart talks about his mission to keep Broke-Ass Stuart independent via Patreon and continue to amplify voices that aren’t being heard in the mainstream.

Tune in for an inspiring and honest conversation with Stuart Schuffman, aka Broke-Ass Stuart. And if you dig the episode, subscribe to Making Ways, recorded live right here in San Francisco, to hear more tales from people who have found their creative calling and want to share what they’ve learned from the journey with you.

More episodes you might dig include: Paul Madonna, Jeremy Fish, Josette Melchor (of Gray Area), Windy Chien (Year of Knots), and more.
