I’m hella jazzed about this. Steve Martin (yes THAT Steve Martin) has a brand new musical Bright Star that’s about to open up at the Curran in San Francisco. And he’s teamed up with Edie Brickell (yes THAT Edie Brickell) to write the story and the music.
As child of the 80’s I grew up on Steve Martin’s movies and he’s in the same pantheon of people as Bill Murray who pretty much only do awesome things. As for Edie Brickell, her debut album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars was one of the first CDs I ever owned and I listened to it ad nauseam
So you can imagine why I’m excited. But really you should be excited too! Why? Because the show is incredible. Here’s the official blurb:
From Grammy winners Steve Martin and Edie Brickell comes BRIGHT STAR, the new musical that “brings a fresh breeze to the theater” (Charles Isherwood, The New York Times). Directed by Tony winner Walter Bobbie and inspired by a real event, this “downright wonderful” (Newsday) original musical tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ‘40s. The story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
Sound great right? The thing that makes this play really special, besides the music and the humor, is that it’s positive and uplifting, which is so deeply needed after the past couple terrible years we’ve had. Here’s one of the song “If You Knew My Story” below to get an idea of what I’m talking about:
