RZA be forming like Voltron at the Castro Theater with samples from the Wu catalog playing to the classic kung fu movie in a 7 p.m. April 26th show.
RZA: Live from the 36th Chamber at The Castro Theatre coincides with the 25th anniversary of Wu-Tang Clan’s album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and recent relaunch of the Wu Wear clothing line.
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Possibly the most influential hip-hop album of all time, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was the Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album from 1993. Their East Coast style infused soul samples like Warriors coming out to play with clips from kung fu movies. Enter the Wu-Tang was incredibly cheaply produced, but was listed among Rollling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time and introduced us to our favorite MCs RZA. GZA. Method Man, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Ghostface Killah and Inspectah Deck.
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
This 1978 Hong Kong kung fu film is widely considered to be one of the greatest kung fu films ever made, and TimeOut listed it the 29th best action film ever,
“The opening credits are a dazzling work of art in themselves, as Gordon Liu performs his high-kicking martial-arts exercises in an empty, spotlit studio, gold bangles jangling on his wrists,” writes TimeOut’s Joshua Rothkopf. “Then the story kicks in: Liu plays Liu Yude, a rebellious student who realizes that the only way to help his downtrodden people fight against Manchu oppression is to learn the ancient ways of Shaolin. But the monks abhor violence—will they aid this charismatic renegade? Like its questing hero, The 36th Chamber achieves a near-perfect balance between violent action and keen-sighted moral, spiritual and philosophical inquiry.”
This kung fu/hip-hop show should be epic, because the Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nuthin’ ta fuck wit’.
