Reading Rocking Rainbow Brings Books & Bands Together
On April 19th at Thee Parkside, you’ll find a unique event called Reading Rocking Rainbow. It’s bringing books and bands together for a fun take on a mixed media performance which includes book readings, interactive games, conversations with outstanding authors and rocking out.
The start of the evening will feature writer and musician Jessamyn Violet as she reads from her debut book, “Secret Rules to Being a Rockstar” from behind her drum set. This young adult novel is a coming of age story that follows a young musician as they navigate becoming a rockstar in LA with little to no support from their family.
Violet’s book has been on several must-read lists including The Nerd Daily’s “Must-Have 2023 Queer Book Releases” and LAMBDA Most Anticipated YA April 2023 List, among many more.
“Secret Rules to Being a Rockstar immerses the reader in the near-dystopian dreamscape of the music industry in 1990s Los Angeles—and I know because I lived it.” —Eva Gardner, bassist for P!NK, Cher, Tegan & Sarah
What bands are playing during Reading Rocking Rainbow?
After the reading, Violet will emcee quizzes and chats about the totally weird, fun and messed-up ‘90s, featuring San Francisco author and CCA professor Tom Barbash. Then, you’ll be able to stay and enjoy live music from several bands.
Violet co-leads a band with guitarist Vince Cuneo. Their psych rock band called Movie Club will be headlining the event next week. Two local bands will be kicking off the music portion of the evening, Orchestra Gold and Helltones (both from Oakland).
