The Wages Of Fear—Bravest (or most foolish project ever) filmmaker honors go this month to Julien Leclercq’s remake of the Henri-Georges Clouzot suspense classic. An oil well fire threatens the lives of the inhabitants of a nearby refugee camp. Experts determine the only way to avert calamity is to detonate the oil well with nitroglycerin. However, getting the 200 kg of nitroglycerin to this desert location means having the two trucks carrying the explosives cross 800 km of land controlled by armed rebels. If the rebels don’t get the truck crews, they still have to deal with operational minefields and very rough terrain which could set off the nitroglycerin. On top of all these problems, the truck crews must complete their delivery in less than 20 hours.
