After Tragic Crash, San Francisco Pleads For Safer Streets
A tragic collision in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood has left a family shattered and a community in mourning. Flowers and candles now mark the site where a devastating crash occurred, claiming the lives of three members of the Oliveira family and leaving their six-month-old baby fighting for survival.
Diego Oliveira, his wife Matilde, and their toddler son Joaquin were struck by an SUV while waiting at a bus stop on Saturday. The father and young child tragically perished at the scene, while Matilde succumbed to her injuries the following day. Their six-month-old son, Caue, remains hospitalized as the sole survivor of the collision.
The driver of the SUV, 78-year-old Mary Fong Lau, has been arrested on suspicion of multiple felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter. Despite the severity of the incident, Fong Lau has yet to be formally charged by the district attorney’s office. Authorities are investigating whether any medical issues or other factors contributed to the crash.
While the legal process unfolds, a vigil held on Monday evening drew hundreds of mourners, including city officials Mayor London Breed and Police Chief Bill Scott. The event was organized by pedestrian safety advocacy group Walk SF, highlighting the ongoing concerns about street safety in the city.

San Francisco already has measures in place to deter speeding such as cameras and speed bumps, but these deterrence-based approaches can really only do so much.
The tragedy has deeply affected not only those directly involved but also the wider community. Witness accounts underscore the shock and horror of the incident, with many expressing solidarity and support for the grieving family. Efforts to comfort and console, such as leaving flowers and stuffed animals at the scene, reflect a collective desire to offer solace amidst the pain.
In the wake of such a devastating loss, questions linger about how such a tragedy could have occurred and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Advocates emphasize the importance of addressing issues like speeding, which continues to pose a significant risk to pedestrians and motorists alike.
As the investigation continues, the city grapples with the sobering reality of the fragility of life and the urgent need for safer streets. The Oliveira family’s untimely deaths serve as a stark reminder of the human toll of traffic accidents and the imperative to prioritize road safety for all. In this time of sorrow, the community stands united in mourning and in the hope for healing and change.
