Just Keep Swimming

by Vanessa Gil, Arts & Events Editor

This first week of the birthday month was full of impromptu activities, including two last minute trips to Stinson Beach. I didn’t know how bad I was craving that ocean therapy until I was in the water, basking in the sun… cherishing the small slice of happy I felt in that moment, when everything else has felt so heavy lately. There was another day, my friend and I were sitting in Heinold’s First & Last Chance Saloon, when a group of guys walked in wearing Giants jerseys. My friend and I looked at each other and decided, 10 minutes before the ferry left, to hop on and catch the game. Made some good memories this week that helped me keep swimming along. There’s so many more good events to help the celebration continue this month. Here’s what I’m excited or the week of 9/10 and beyond.

Few 21st century artists have had the cultural impact of Jack Antonoff. Through his work as a producer for artists like Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, The 1975 and Lorde, he’s won eight Grammys to date. For years critics have wondered how his work is so successful and what defines it when it doesn’t quite sound like anything else (Antonoff ignores what’s on trend, even when that’s his last project). His methodology, he reveals, is the same for his production work as it is for writing his music with Bleachers: The great journey and struggle of creating your sound is to drill further and further into it, while the whole time shocking yourself and the people around you. The results are always intimate, confessional and unwaveringly tasteful.

Spent a lot of my developmental years living in a variety of places with a number of life experiences. And then layered on top of all of this is the assimilation I felt being a transracially adopted refugee. My music in a nutshell is a culmination of these experiences blended with the empathy I feel for the experiences with others. The mission of my music is to heal with others — with every nation and tongue, in due time.”
