Was The Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Fight Rigged?

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I’m not a boxing fan, but for some reason (maybe because I’m already paying for Netflix) I had to watch what was arguably the most unethical mainstream sporting event in modern history.

America seems to be running low on originality. Every movie is a remake of a movie that was popular 20 years ago. And now even professional sports has to make people who are borderline senior citizens fight because boxing hasn’t had a Mike Tyson since… well… Mike Tyson.

So who better to have a fight than… Mike Tyson? The only problem is Mike Tyson is 58 years old and his opponent isn’t really even a boxer, but a 27 year old who acts like he’s perpetually in a competition to be the most hateable person on the planet.

When Jake Paul isn’t bilking 12 year olds out of money for energy drinks, he and his brother, Logan Paul, focus their energy on scamming fans of professional fighting. Well, at least it certainly seems that way.

This fight was hyped up for nearly a year, and to say it was disappointing is a bit of an understatement.

When Tyson and Paul finally took the ring after what was one of the most brutal boxing matches in the history of boxing, I was scared that this fight was going to be similarly brutal. Amanda Serrano’s eyebrow looked like it was about to fall off her face. While I wanted Tyson to wipe the floor with Paul, I knew that was unlikely. Mike Tyson is nearly 30 years out of his prime, and for as much shit people talk about Jake Paul, the dude, while no Mike Tyson in his prime, can certainly fight.

After the first two rounds, which in my opinion, Tyson won, the match seemed to lack energy. Both fighters appeared to be toying with the other one. I assumed it was due to Tyson’s old age until I saw a video of Mike Tyson training for the fight from a few weeks prior. Tyson was doing 8 hour workouts and aggressively punching the shit out of his sparring partner… Which made me wonder… was this fucking rigged?

Despite the old age, the Tyson I saw in those training videos was fucking frightening. He was quick, aggressive, and powerful. Yet, when the real fight occurred, Tyson seemed to allow Paul to punch him without effectively countering.

The question is, if it was fixed, why? Well, that’s pretty simple actually. Mike Tyson used to be one of the wealthiest athletes in the world with a net worth of nearly $400 Million, but after several scandals and bad investments, Tyson was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2003.

It’s not like Tyson was broke prior to the fight with Paul, but according to reports, Tyson had a net worth that hovered around $10 million prior to the fight with Paul. Tyson was paid $20 Million win or lose for the fight, essentially tripling his net worth in one night.

Also, Paul has a lot more to gain from a win against Tyson than Tyson has to lose from a loss against Paul. Paul’s career gets a huge boost as does Tyson’s bank account.

It makes you wonder was the largest boxing match of the year fake?

All signs point to probably. But it’s America! What is this country without a good scam?
