Trump May Sell San Francisco Federal Building

In a move of pettiness so extreme that it even shocked me, the Trump Administration is considering selling the San Francisco Federal Building seemingly because it’s named after Nancy Pelsoi. The 18-story tower, which had been known as the San Francisco Federal Building until its dedication to Pelosi in December, is located in an area that’s been dealing with issues like open-air drug dealing and illegal markets. In addition to that building, they’re also considering selling the 1930s-era federal building at 50 United Nations Plaza, which houses the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) regional office.

Former Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier slammed Trump for potentially selling off the federal buildings in San Francisco, claiming it’s all part of a political vendetta against Democrats, especially California. She pointed out that if these buildings are sold, the lease will just keep going up, meaning taxpayers would be stuck covering property taxes, unlike with federal buildings where taxes aren’t an issue.

In a 2020 executive order, Trump even called the 7th Street federal building, which opened in 2007 at a cost of $144 million, one of the ugliest buildings in the city. Andy Ball, a developer involved with the building 20 years ago, agreed, calling it a waste of taxpayer money from the start and claiming it cost about 50% more than if it had been privately funded. According to him, in today’s market, the difference between the building’s construction cost and what it could sell for is huge.

Regardless of whether or not that is true, the move does seem to be an attack on California and particularly San Francisco. Trump has also cut funding for the Presidio Trust, one of San Francisco’s nicest parts and most popular tourist attractions. Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and well-known San Francisco hater has a long history of attacking San Francisco on X (formerly Twitter) and even has attacked local politicians such as San Francisco’s first openly socialist member of the Board of Supervisors, Dean Preston.

This is going to be a rough four years. While the selling of the Federal Building may not seem like a huge deal, it does show that the Trump Administration is attempting to use its power to hurt the city, which couldn’t come at a worse time as San Francisco is trying to bounce back from economic losses that occurred during the Pandemic.
